Applying for a VA home loan in Virginia? If so, you will notice one of the requirements is to submit your Certificate of Eligibility with your application, also called your “COE.” In this post, we will tell you what you need to know about your COE, and how you submit yours with your VA mortgage application.
What is a Certificate of Eligibility?
When you apply for a VA mortgage, you need a way to show that you qualify. The document that the VA uses to verify that is your COE.
If you are a veteran or a current or former member of the National Guard or Reserve, you will need to provide your discharge or separation papers (DD214) to fill this purpose.
If you are still serving in the military, you will need a signed statement of service from your commander, adjutant or personnel officer.
If you have another status that differs from those above, the requirements may be different.
You can find a full list of all required documentation for all possible situations here on the VA website.
Obtaining Your COE
There are two options for getting your Certificate of Eligibility. You either can request it through the mail, or you can get it online.
Want to go through the mail? This method will have a slower turnaround time than going through the VA’s web portal. Fill out VA Form 26-1880 and send it. It is titled “Request for a Certificate of Eligibility.”
To speed up the process, use the Web LGY VA web portal instead. In fact, we can take care of that for you.
