If you are buying a home in the near future, it is wise to start planning ahead for the moving process. That not only includes everything you need to do leading up to the move, but also everything you should do directly afterwards. Here are a few high priority tasks to do after you move into your new home.

- Change your locks. It is wise to change your locks right after a move. In theory, you should be the only one with the keys. But there is always the possibility that there are old keys floating around that were not collected. Just to be sure, changing the locks is a good idea.
- Deep clean. Right when you move into a new home is the perfect time to do a deep cleaning. You will never have another chance to do it completely unencumbered by all of your furniture, décor, and other items. Take advantage of this opportunity before you unpack.
- Check all the systems in your home. This is a good time to do your initial check of home safety systems such as your carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors. While you are at it, you also should check your HVAC.
- Unpack (of course). Now you can start unpacking all your boxes. There isn’t much to say about this, as you probably already know the best approach to take.
- Update your address. One of the more tedious chores you will need to take care of after moving into a new home is updating your address. You will need to do this with the IRS, the DMV, the SSA (if applicable), your insurance agencies, and your financial services. You also will want to update your employer, family and friends. And do not forget to update your voter registration. Some of these have a deadline. For example, in many states, the DMV requires you to update your address within 30 days of moving. So, do not delay this task.
- Install your security system. If you are going to install a home security system, this is a good time to do it.
- Start taking notes about the home. In an ideal world, a home inspection would reveal everything you need to know about your home. But it rarely works out that way. Start a spreadsheet early on after moving in where you take notes about the home. You can use it to keep track of any issues that might require your attention, as well as things about your home that might just be a bit unusual.
